YOUR TRAVEL COMPANION: RAW MATERIAL TOURS - WHERE THE PEPPER AND CO. GROWS!
How does coffee grow? Where does cocoa grow? From the coffee bean to the cup, from the cocoa pod to the chocolate: Experience the entire manufacturing process step by step through guided and exclusive factory tours of organic and fair trade cooperatives. You will get to know the people behind the products and the impact of fair trade first hand.
My name is Thomas Angerer. I am Tyrolean and lived in Latin America for three years. In addition to travel, languages and cultural competence, I bring experience from working with cooperatives and fair trade. I live in Vienna and have been working for Fairtrade Austria and as a travel companion for raw material trips from Life Earth Reisen for over 10 years.
Where the pepper grows, cocoa, tea and coffee are not far away. Above all, it is very beautiful there. Tea gardens, organic mixed cultivation, virgin forests, coffee cultivation landscapes and cocoa plantations are an experience for the senses. The encounters with the farmers and families are something very special.
I would be very happy to accompany you on this journey.
Best regards,
Thomas Angerer

day 1
WELCOME TO THE COFFEE REGION
Our drivers will be waiting for us at the airport and will accompany us throughout the journey. After about 6 hours we reach Dilla. We eat and refresh ourselves at the hotel. The HOMA coffee cooperative welcomes us and at a meeting we introduce ourselves and discuss the program. At dinner we are guests in a traditional coffee ceremony.
Hotel: Saron Lodge Dilla or similar depending on availability.
day 2
THE YIRGACHEFFE COFFEE
Welcome to the region of high-quality Arabica coffee Yirgacheffe. From cultivation on the farm, washing in the collection points, to the cooperative's dry mill and export: learn the entire process. Get hands-on with the coffee harvest yourself. Our photographer takes a photo of all participants during the harvest. In the afternoon we visit a coffee research center and other cooperative projects.
Hotel: Saron Lodge Dilla or similar.
Day 3
PROJECTS AND BASICS OF ORGANIC AND FAIRTRADE CERTIFICATIONS
Today we visit a tree nursery for coffee seedlings. How does climate change and organic certification affect coffee cultivation? In the afternoon we learn about the impact of Fairtrade standards, minimum prices and premiums and can visit a premium project and a school ourselves. We drive north and sleep one night at the Haile Resort Hawassa.
Day 4
THE SIDAMO COFFEE
Welcome to the Sidamo coffee region. Together with the cooperative “Sidama Union” we visit a farm, a washing station and a drying mill. Learn everything about coffee cultivation and processing from the field to export. We help with the harvest and learn more about small-scale farming and cooperatives. At the Hotel Haile Resort Hawassa (or similar) we refresh ourselves by jumping into the cool pool.
Day 5
COFFEE EXCHANGE AND CUPPING
Back in the capital, Addis Ababa, we visit the ECX (Ethiopian Commodity Exchange) coffee exchange and the cooperative's headquarters. Here the coffee is prepared for export. At the end of the trip we have a meeting and a big coffee cupping. After a walk through the city, we go to the airport for the return flight (departure is at midnight 00:10).
Arrival in Vienna/Munich on Thursday November 16th in the morning
